Upcoming: Migrants

Mantra Percussion

Mantra Percussion

The composers of W4 New Music Collective (W4) team up with Mantra Percussion and video artist Xuan Zhang to create an evening-length musical work which contemplates the subject of human migration. Migrants will have four separate story lines composed individually by W4’s director-composers, each focusing on a separate approach to the subject of human migration: the ancient history of Homo sapiens journeying out of Africa, the contemporary global crises of migration brought about by climate change, the local story of how migration has shaped the character of Brooklyn, and the individual story of a Syrian refugee into Germany. Each story will be interconnected with the others in subtle ways and will intermingle to explore the challenges of movement so central to the human condition. The final piece will be performed by the percussion sextet Mantra with integrated video projections in late 2016/2017.

Ultimately, a great satisfaction emerges, not only from the obvious entertainment factor, but from watching one great artwork father the creation of another.

skyros quartet at fast forward austin (2014):

Quick, quirky, and rambunctious, the piece popped right off the stage.
